National Geographic Traveller has released its round up of 16 ‘cool’ locations not to be missed next year – with some surprising choices. Top of the recommendations is Iran, with new tours available and a reopened UK embassy in Tehran expected to bring brighter prospects for the country’s tourism industry.

Next in line for the bucket list is Costa Rica with its lure of rainforests, nature trails, volcanoes and deserted beaches. With two airlines starting direct flights to the exotic country in 2016, British tourism is predicted to soar in coming months.

Pat Riddell, editor, said, ‘We’ve scoured the planet for this year’s must-see destinations and come up with an eclectic list of top spots for culture, cuisine, festive celebrations, pristine coastline… and places to go.

‘Some are obvious, some not so, but we think they should be top of anyone’s travels plans in 2016 — and beyond.’
